Pars Today – Iran’s Foreign Minister sent a message congratulating the election of Pope Leo XIV as the new leader of the world’s Catholics. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was recently chosen as the successor to the late Pope Francis. The new pope, who has taken the name Leo XIV, is 69 years old, originally from Chicago, Illinois, USA, and is the first American to lead the Catholic Church.
According to Pars Today, on Friday, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, in a message to Pope Leo XIV, paid respects to the late Pope Francis and expressed hope that his election would be a valuable opportunity to promote justice, human dignity, and safeguard peace and tranquility.
Addressing Pope Leo XIV, Araghchi wrote: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations on your election as the 267th leader of the world’s Catholics.”
He continued: “In an era when the world is unprecedentedly plagued by injustice, unkindness, poverty, inequality, war, and bloodshed, the global attention to the election of the new pope is a sign of hope and public expectation for religion and religious teachings to play a role in safeguarding lofty human and moral values and preventing the dominance of moral vices in human society.”
While praying for the soul of Pope Francis, Araghchi added: “We pray and are confident that your election as the leader of Catholics will be a significant opportunity to promote spirituality, morality, justice, human dignity, interfaith and intercultural tolerance, and to safeguard peace and tranquility.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister emphasized: “The Islamic Republic of Iran, in line with its principled approach of promoting ethics, human rights, and human dignity worldwide through religious teachings, will, as always, strive to strengthen its relations with the Vatican. Iran will spare no effort in promoting interfaith dialogues and working toward global peace and security, while confronting violence, oppression, injustice, and bullying. We are ready for any consultation, synergy, and cooperation with the Vatican in this regard.”
