Pars Today- The president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in his meeting with the Russian foreign minister, stressing continuation of constructive Iran-Russia interaction in the region, said, “The two countries hold close views on regional issues.”
During his meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday in Tehran, Masoud Pezeshkian said, “The two countries pursue strengthening of regional and international cooperation within mutual interaction and via regional and international organizations such as Shanghai [Cooperation Organization], Eurasia Economic Union and BRICS.” According to Pars Today, quoting from IRNA, Pezeshkian pointed to the growth in bilateral relations and underlined the need to accelerate the execution of agreements, especially the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Tehran and Moscow.
Iran, Russia enjoying many common interests to continue effective regional cooperation
Russian foreign minister, for his part, said that he would do his best to continue and accelerate the growing trend of cooperation and execution of bilateral agreements, particularly the Iranian-Russian Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Calling the completion of Iran’s joining the EEU as a new and effective capacity for strengthening bilateral ties, especially in the field of economy and trade, Lavrov stated, “Iran and Russia have a lot of common interests in continuation of effective cooperation in the region.”
Iran-Russia bilateral economic cooperation to speed up
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, also said during a press conference with his Russian counterpart in Tehran, that both sides had constructive and detailed talks on various issues. He added, “We have exchanged views on mutual and economic cooperation which is growing rapidly. We are cooperating in the fields of energy, railroad, agriculture, tourism and so on. We had good discussions about regional issues, too.”
Increase of Iran-Russia trade exchanges
Russian foreign minister, also, said during the news conference, “Despite pressures stemming from sanctions, the trade exchanges of the two countries have increased %13 for the past 13 years.”
Lavrov added, “International and regional issues were discussed. Russia and Iran are determined to resolve global issues according to the UN Charter and based on the principle of equality of sovereignty of governments.”
Russia: Unilateral American sanctions against Iran are illegal
Spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, also stated in Tehran, “All unilateral American sanctions, which have been somehow ratified via circumventing the JCPOA, are illegal and illegitimate.”
The Iranian-Russian Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was signed by the presidents of the two countries during Pezeshkian’s trip to Moscow on January 17, 2025.
Dariush Safarinezhad, specializing in Russian issues, said to the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network (IRINN) about Lavrov’s trip to Tehran, “To take a trip at this level, after the meeting of Russians with Americans, indicates Iran’s international importance.”
Safarinezhad added, “Today, Iran, Russia and China have turned into new world powers and they are the three influential global powers. The trend ahead of the main center of the world political and economic power is determined here and even if you enter the economic fields, the combination of these three countries will create a great event.”
Rouhollah Modabber, expert and analyst of foreign policy and Russian affairs, also, reiterated, “Lavrov’s trip to Iran specifically indicates that Russia holds a very friendly view on relations with Iran.”
This expert maintained that currently the EU Troika play no role in the current global equations and their situation is so dire that even the Americans omitted them in the peace talks of Ukraine. These show that Iran and Russia have to deepen their friendly ties in order to take part in a win-win game.
